What is smudging, you ask; its a practice of cleansing energy and bring balance back into someone life, an object, and/or physical area, involving burning sage, different herbs, and/or resins to release sacred healing smoke. The smoke drifts into the air and floods the space with purifying, healing energy. It can also be used to open up another energetic spiritual realm, allowing us to connect closer to other realms, not seen by the human eye. Smudging dates back centuries from First Nation Indigenous Communities.
“Energy cleansing has been around for centuries, starting with First Nation Indigenous Communities. Today, several other communities use different types of smoke and tools to cleanse a person, an object, and/or an area.” - Lex
By using the techniques of smudging, you're cleansing and balancing the energy. Every moment of every day, we expose ourselves to other energies. This can be negative or stagnant, which can result in a low and negative energy plateau. Feelings of uninspired, stuck, depressed, exhausted, sad and low vibrations can be clues to these types of vibrations. By cleansing the space, and/or ourselves, this helps restores positive energy and balance.
Smudging: How To Start
What you need:
Smudge (examples: sage, cedar, sweet grass, palo santo)
An ignition source (candle, lighter, matches)
A heat safe extinguisher dish (abalone shell, pyrex dish with sand/water, candle holder/water)
(you can also look for a starter smudge kit in our shop)
1: You want to know why your smudging. Is it for cleansing a new crystal, your home, you? Are you wanting to set a space to manifest in, with clear energy? Once you have your reason, set your intentions. Ask out loud for what your intention is. An example is, "I smudge to clear this home from stagnant and negative energy, inviting in positive-balanced energy". If you think of it as a "prayer" type scenario, it may help you come up with your own intention saying.
2. You want to make sure your doors and/or windows are open. We do this, is to direct the negative, stagnant energy away from your space your cleansing, guiding it away from the space. As well as to have a fresh oxygen supply (hehe).
3. Once you have completed steps one and two, and have your supplies ready, you're ready to ignite the flame. Once your smudge is ignited, and it becomes flamed up, you'll need to extinguish the flame to release the cleansing smoke. Make sure to have your heat resistant dish to catch any falling embers and ashes.
You want to waft the smoke in a clockwise direction, into every corner, full doorway and open room/space. Make sure to open your closets and cupboards, any segregated areas of the space as well, mindful to fill the area with the cleansing smoke.
If the smudge goes out while smudging, just reignite it and continue.
Once you are done, you can extinguish the flame in your heat resistant bowl, in sand, in water or let it burn out naturally. Do not leave it unattended while burning.
There is no right or wrong time to smudge, including the frequency of doing so. Trust your intuition and energy. If you're still unsure on the frequency to smudge, you can always schedule cleansings in the month; similar to changing bed sheets - each person has their own preference.
For myself, I smudge weekly! Hopefully this quick smudge write up has helped you, and if it hasn't, please reach out and we would love to help you with it.
